The Last Word: January 23-29

Despite some downbeat headlines, the week was dominated by the unveiling of Sony's new handheld, the Next Generation Portable.
Has it only been a week? The past several days seem much longer. The year isn't even a month old but already some of the year's biggest game news has arrived. Last week it was the 3DS price and launch date. This week, it was the unveiling of Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP), arguably the most powerful handheld device ever made. Flexing impressive CPU and GPU muscle, the device also has a bevy of other features PSP owners were clamoring for--including dual thumbsticks. GameSpot was there at its debut and has many news reports, previews, and videos from first-hand from the event in Tokyo.

The NGP debuted to much fanfare this week.

NEWS
A week chock full of news began on a depressing note, with word that up to 350 people had been laid off from Disney Interactive Studios. Then came the less-than welcome news that the Russian media had begun linking the tragic Moscow airport bombing with the "No Russian" scene from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

However, the majority of the week's headlines were dominated by a single positive development--the unveiling of Sony's Next Generation Portable, or NGP. The device premiered Thursday in Tokyo with the fanfare befitting the debut of a major platform. The handheld has a 16:9 5-inch OLED touch screen, a four-core ARM CPU, a PowerVR multi-core GPU, a touch pad, gyroscopic control, Wi-Fi, 3G, and dual thumbsticks. It also will feature games from another of Sony's initiatives, playstation Suite, which aims to bring PlayStation One games to Android handhelds and tablets--and NGPs--worldwide.

PREVIEWS
With the headlines this week being dominated by Sony's NGP announcement, it only makes sense that the GameSpot previews team would follow up on that news with some hands-on impressions of the games for the new handheld. Sure enough, GameSpot's own Ricardo Torres was there to check out some of the new titles, including Uncharted and Little Deviants. But it wasn't all NGP this week, as GameSpot also posted previews of SOCOM 4 multiplayer as well as a brand-new Q&A for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Study shocker! Mobile users piddle around on the internet while watching TV

Shocker of shockers, folks: people do more than just watch TV when they're watching TV. A study of over 8,000 willing individuals from Nielsen and Yahoo recently discovered that some 86 percent of mobile internet users tinker around on their devices while situated in front of the tube. It seems that Googling random facts, checking their Facebook news feed and seeing who has tweeted in the past 30 seconds were atop the list of activities to do while watching, but strangely, a full 20 percent confessed to search for more information about a commercial they recently saw. Hit the source link below (PDF) to be instantly bombarded with facts and figures, but first, refresh that TweetCaster feed. Ah, so much better.Study shocker! Planon Slimscan, world's slimmest scanner, hands-on (video)

Been needing a credit card scanner to execute your superspy data collection with? Say hello to your new best buddy, the Planon Slimscan. This teeny tiny unit is equipped with a 600dpi optical scanner, though it shrinks images down to a 300dpi resolution to get a reasonable number of them to fit within the 64MB of onboard memory. Intended primarily as a collector of business card and receipt data, the Slimscan will come with Abbyy and PaperPort software along with the ability to export your stuff out to an Excel spreadsheet. Pricing is set at $120 and shipping is expected to commence any time now.

NEWS: This Week in Nintendo Downloads

Karnov is here to hurt people.
It's the last Nintendo Downloads of 2010, and the year is going out with a bang. This week we have two WiiWare releases, one WiiWare Demo, two NEO-GEO Virtual Console releases, and three DSiWare releases. The first WiiWare title is chick chick BOOM, which turns the statement about ending the year "with a bang" into a terrible pun. In this game from tons of bits, you throw items (like pianos, elephants, and jellyfish) at your opponent, who has to block them by drawing lines. There's also a corncob and a piñata who'll help. You can throw stuff with them for 800 Wii Points ($8).
